Hemp or Hype? Is CBD Skincare Worth It?

The short answer is, um, yes! But just like with any other high-profile ingredients, you've got to know what you're looking for—more on that later. First, let's get into why CBD seems like it's the new 'it' ingredient.

Antioxidant Power

Stronger than vitamin C or vitamin E, CBD acts as a powerful antioxidant to protect skin proteins like collagen and elastin from free radicals and sun damage. Free radical damage, known as oxidation, 'rusts' the skin and can cause premature aging with increased hyperpigmentation, wrinkles and a loss of skin elasticity. The antioxidant properties of CBD help neutralize free radicals, helping the skin to maintain a clear and smooth surface.

Calming Anti-Inflammatory

Another primary function of CBD is its anti-inflammatory effect. For those with rosacea, eczema, or painful, inflamed acne, CBD can be a godsend. Doctors often prescribe topical steroid creams or ointments for skin issues like these. Steroid treatments can be useful but can cause adverse side effects such as collagen reduction, skin thinning, skin atrophy, or the worsening of rosacea.

Boosts Skin's Chill Factor

Our bodies have natural endocannabinoids, which are Cannabinoid (CB) receptors. Using CBD products can increase CB receptors within the body to naturally calm inflammation and bring the skin to a neutral state. This process can reduce redness, itching and the damaging effects of inflammation, which, like free radicals, can accelerate aging, wrinkles, pigmentation and leave the body open to infection.

Acne Reducer

Our bodies have CB2 receptors on our sebaceous glands to not only reduce inflammation in acne but to help balance excess oil production in a way that won't strip the skin of its essential oils needed for its functions. CBD has also been found to kill certain acne-causing bacteria.

Chronic Offender

Given the legal renaissance that CBD is only recently seeing, there is still a lot of research that needs to be done, but current data is showing a lot of promise for chronic skin disorders. Studies suggest that CBD can slow the overproduction of skin cells, which helps to treat eczema and rosacea.

So, Is it Worth the Hype?

For CBD skincare to be worth it, the best advice is not to break the bank on your CBD skincare routine. Try a few products and see if they work for you, but do your research first. Some companies will use low-grade CBD mixed with other chemicals to make their products cheaper. Check the label for ingredients listed as CBD oil, hemp extract, or cannabidiol. See if the brand mentions if their formula uses full-spectrum CBD. Full-spectrum CBD is extracted from the whole Hemp plant for the most effective results.

CBD skincare is touted as a "miracle ingredient," and while it's incredibly versatile and can meet a lot of needs, there's only one way to know if it will work for you, try it!

We recommend starting with a daily moisturizer that you can use both day and night. Our favorite is me.life Whipped Face Cream for an absorbable and unstoppable glow.
